Gender-based violence in intimate relationships represents a significant and serious social issue. It includes various forms of abuse that can be grouped into four main categories of violence against women: physical abuse, psychological abuse, sexual abuse, and economic violence. This phenomenon affects the lives of many women, especially those who are not brave enough to step forward and seek support and help. It is crucial to raise public awareness about violence against women and the injustices they suffer in intimate relationships behind closed doors. This paper focuses on the definition of gender-based violence, its types, and the dynamics of intimate relationships, including the reasons why women remain in abusive relationships and the psychological consequences. By analyzing the typology of violence, the focus is directed toward four main types of violence that women experience and the factors contributing to their fear of leaving, such as emotional and traumatic bonds with the abuser and social prejudices. In the legal framework, the emphasis is on international and domestic regulations, with a particular focus on the Istanbul Convention and the Law on Protection from Domestic Violence, which prescribes emergency protection measures for victims of violence. The institutional role is also explored, highlighting the importance of cooperation between the police, the judiciary, social services, and non-governmental organizations. By empowering institutions and providing support to victims, as well as changing societal perceptions, a safer, violence-free environment can be created.
