This paper addresses the topic of the right to access information in public authorities. Although relatively new, this right is a fundamental right in modern democratic societies. The aim of this paper is to present the legislative framework of the Republic of Croatia and its application in practice, with a particular focus on the process of access and the challenges faced by citizens when exercising this right. The paper relies on the analysis of relevant laws, with additional use of manuals published as aids for exercising the right to information. The aim of the legislation was to increase transparency and public trust in the work of public authorities, as well as to reduce corruption. However, a significant problem remains the lack of public awareness about how to exercise the right to access information. Therefore, this paper attempts to summarize the ways of exercising this right, starting from the access process itself, the legally prescribed deadlines, and the possibility of filing an appeal. Additionally, emphasis is placed on the types of information that should be publicly available and their purpose. Two institutions were established to assist in exercising this right: the Information Officer and the Information Commissioner. Another way of informing the public is through public consultations, which contribute to the openness and effectiveness of public authorities' work, as well as to strengthening public trust in these institutions. However, despite being public and accessible to all, this practice is rarely used. High transparency in information is crucial when it comes to the financing of organizations that run programs or projects for the public good. When allocating funds, the law mandates the public disclosure of funding sources, amounts, and how and where organizations spend the money. Given Croatia's history of financial mismanagement, these laws and regulations should help prevent embezzlement and ensure proper use of funds.
