Alcohoism is one of the biggest problems of society today. It is present in almost all cultures and is considered a common and acceptable way of creating atmosphere, celebrating special situations and/or solving negative thoughts and emotions. . If a person with a problem of excessive alcohol consumption decides to seek help, he and his family become members of the treatment for alcoholics. There are various factors that influence the occurrence of alcohol addiction in an individual. These can be social factor, i.e. influences, influences of discrimination, influences of the community and influences of family and peers, which will be discussed later. Alcoholism is mostly treated through the medical aspect, and therefore it is accepted and understood as a disease, but it is treated as a symptom. In the Republic of Croatia, the most common and accessible form of outpatient treatment for alcohol addiction is Clubs for treated alcoholics. They are spread over the majority of the territory of Croatia (about 800 of them operate), and they have also spread to Italy. The specificity of the work of clubs for treated alcoholics is based on the inclusion of all family members of the user who has the problem of excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages.In a therapeutic community, members question and learn about themselves, other members, and professionals who help them master the problem-solving process they initially face. There are different types of support groups with different programs to suit different individuals who are dealing with their own difficulties and problems. Group work will be more effective if the problem and ways to solve it are discovered in time. By studying the literature and research, this paper emphasizes the way alcoholism is perceived by others and society, and the specifics of group work with people with the problem of excessive alcohol consumption.
