One of the very important tasks of social workers and other professionals who work with people with disabilities is to encourage the creation of a positive self-image and positive self-perception. In their daily work, social workers often encounter users whose self-image is damaged or is negative and unrealistic because it was created under the influence of external unfavorable factors that affect social development of the individual. Throughout history, people with disabilities have been marginalized and considered helpless members of society, and for this reason their right to freedom of choice and independent decision-making has been neglected. The fact is that most often members of their families or other people close to them make decision for them and decide on their life and way of functioning in society. Self-advocacy is one of the important factors that influence the successful inclusion of people with disabilities in the community and their active participation in the activities offered by that community; on the success of social interactions of persons with disabilities and on raising the quality of their lifes. The aim od this work is to look at the concept od self-advocacy within the inclusion movement and to see what are the advantages and benefits of self-advocacy, as well as to see what similarities there are between advocacy and self-advocacy in the social welfare system.
