Sorcery is a very widespread medieval phenomenon and we can say with certainty that even more widespread was the panic fear of wizards and witches. People who lived then fed on fantasy and could not understand certain phenomena, so they attributed them to demons, such as women who have intercourse with the devil, fly on all sorts of objects or animals, kill small children, meet on intersections in the dead of night, cause storms. We have to bear in mind that we are talking about a time of minimal education, major plague epidemics, etc. The most common opinion is that educated women and midwives were at that time considered witches. But why only women? It is believed that this is because women have always been more compliant than men and thus the weaker seks, so in this way the devil could more easily seduce, exploit and turn them into his maids. The persecution of witches is one of the darkest and most complex phenomena in both European and world history. They develop from common law, folk beliefs whose roots go back to primitive and pagan times and from the legislation of antiquity as well. It continues its development in the age of humanism where the Catholic and Protestant churches seek to take advantage of this irrationality to strengthen their power, faith in God and fight against heretics and heresy. Finally, by the time the 17th ended and the 18th century began, the end of these monstrous processes was in sight.
