The right of people with intellectual disabilities to marry and establish their own families has often been compromised throughout history. The situation has improved over time, but it is still not ideal. Certain rights continue to be disregarded, and they are not fully informed about their possibilities and responsibilities. The dominant support system is formalized and lacks personalization, heavily influenced by bureaucratization. Sometimes, families of people with intellectual disabilities reject assistance and believe that they are acting in the best interest of their children solely through their own influence. Each person differs from others, even when belonging to the same category, and requires a social approach tailored to their desires and needs. An individualized social approach can ultimately lead to the realization of the rights of people with intellectual disabilities. Studies conducted to understand the realization of marriage, parenthood, sexuality, and intimate relationships for people with intellectual disabilities have shown that these individuals, and sometimes even their family members, lack the knowledge and attitudes that would support their rights. These research findings indicate a significant need for additional education, improvement of formal and informal support, both for individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families, as well as for professionals working with them. Social workers play a crucial role in ensuring the rights of individuals with intellectual disabilities, including their right to marry and have a family.
