Law as a system should be equally protecting and applied to all citizens, and certain rules will be applied depending on the jurisdiction of a particular legal system.However, there are groups of citizens who need protection of their rights more than others due to their special vulnerability.This group certainly includes children who, due to their mental and physical abilities, are not in the same position as adult citizens.It should be emphasized that children's rights have not been in focus for a long time and have gradually developed. In the international community, family law began to develop on the basis of instruments that were primarily global in nature.Therefore, in the first part of the paper, the author gives a brief overview of the development of the European Union, given that it is primarily a community focused on economic cooperation and foreign policy. In view of this, the author points out global legal sources of children's rights that have significantly influenced the development of children's rights in the European Union, such as the Convention on the Rights of the Child, but also other sources adopted within the Council of Europe.In the second part of the paper, the author emphasizes the primary law of the European Union and the way in which it shapes the system of protection of children's rights in the European Union, given that it is binding on all member states.In the last part of the paper, the author deals with soft-law documents of the European Union that present strategies, guidelines and plans for building the future system. Such documents also have concrete solutions in accordance with which drafts of the system of protection of children's rights in the European Union de lege ferenda should be observed.Given the frequent social changes and their impact on children's development, especially in the form of globalization, the growing presence of technology and the rapid change of society and social values, it is unquestionable that soft-law documents will be the ones that can change and adopt to the new circumstances and thus find effective solutions for the future rights of children.The question arises whether such solutions will be sufficient and what will be the content of such documents given the challenges of modern times.
