The sixties and the seventies were a period of national activism with a desire to reform economic, cultural and political life in Croatia. It was the beginning of political pluralism. The awakening of national consciousness of the Croatian people resulted in aspirations and demands for the abolition of the single-party, separation from the unitary system, use of Croatian language and great economic reforms. Constitutional amendments of 1971 were just the beginning. The Croatian Spring is considered to be a democratic movement in which many layers of society took part in - from Croatian leaders who, in spite of the great resistance and pressures from all sides, considered themselves capable of fighting for these significant changes thanks to their high functions, to the students who recognized the importance of the ideas set by the leaders of the movement and as an expression of support for this mass movement went into strike. The aim of the national movement was abolition of the former social model and multi-national arrangement of states. Economic and national issues, as well as the question of language did not come to the approval of the majority, resulting not in giving up but in forced suppression of the movement. Nevertheless, the national consciousness of the Croatian people has never stopped. The movement of the seventies was only the beginning of Croatian struggle.
