Abstract
Starija populacija naglo raste. Osobe u procesu starenja prolaze kroz različite promjene u fizičkom, socijalnom i psihičkom funkcioniranju. Iako je termin starost izvorno izazvao negativne reakcije zbog povezanosti s negativnim uvjerenjima o procesu starenja, često je krivo tumačen i netočno primijenjen na stariju dob. Netočne informacije dovele su do stvaranja negativnih stereotipa, predrasuda i diskriminacije kroz pogrešno uvjerenje da je starenje negativan proces. Navedena negativna razmišljanja vezana uz stariju dob predstavljaju značajne probleme za ljude u posljednjem razdoblju njihova života. Stoga je važno razmotriti probleme starenja, kao i socijalna pitanja povezana s problemima koji zahvaćaju starije osobe. Kako bi se poboljšala kvaliteta života starijih osoba, društvo mora na odgovarajući način razmotriti pitanja negativnih posljedica koje uzrokuju stereotipi i predrasude prema njima. Stručnjaci i šira javnost trebaju istražiti porijeklo ovih predrasuda, kako se manifestiraju i što učiniti da se njihova prisutnost smanji.
Abstract (english)
The elderly population is growing rapidly. People in the aging process go through various changes in physical, social and psychological functioning. Although the term old age originally caused negative reactions due to its association with negative beliefs about the aging process, it has often been misinterpreted and incorrectly applied to old age. Incorrect information has led to the creation of negative stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination through the mistaken belief that aging is a negative process. The mentioned negative thoughts related to old age represent significant problems for people in the last period of their life. Therefore, it is important to consider the problems of aging as well as social issues related to problems affecting the elderly. In order to improve the quality of life of the elderly, society must adequately consider the issues of negative consequences caused by stereotypes and prejudices towards them. Experts and the general public should investigate the origin of these prejudices, how they manifest and what can be done to reduce their presence.
