This paper aims to briefly present local elections as an instrument for the election of representative bodies of local and regional self-government units and the election of municipal heads, mayors, and prefects. The work is approached from the legal standpoint, so the biggest attention is paid to the legal framework and regulation of local and regional self-government and local elections, thus the work deals with the Constitution of the Republic of Croatia, the Law on Local and Regional Self-Government, the Law on Local Elections and European Charter on Local Self-Government. For comparison with local elections, the paper also presents presidential and parliamentary elections in the Republic of Croatia. Great importance was given to the bodies for the implementation of elections, namely the State Election Commission, the City of Zagreb election commission, county, city, and municipal election commissions, and polling committees. The right of national minorities for representation in the representative and executive bodies of the units is also given a brief insight. The last part of the paper presents the results for the members of the county assemblies in the Republic of Croatia in 2021, as well as the results of the elections for the municipal council and the municipal mayor in the municipality of Trnava in 2021.
