Croats and Hungarians are connected by one of the longest lasting state and legal creations, in which they lived through eight centuries, starting in 1102 when a personal union was concluded between Hungary and Croatia, then within the Habsburg Monarchy and finally within Austro-Hungary. The dissolution of that state union took place in 1918. After the Austro-Hungarian settlement was concluded in 1867, the former single Habsburg monarchy was divided into Austrian and Hungarian parts. Dalmatia and the Croatian part of Istria, together with Slovenian countries, belonged to the Austrian part of the Monarchy, and Croatia and Vojvodina to the Hungarian part of the Monarchy. A year later, in 1868, a Croatian-Hungarian settlement was concluded, which regulated the relations between the Kingdom of Dalmatia, Croatia and Slavonia and the Kingdom of Hungary within the Hungarian part of the Monarchy. This Settlement laid the legal foundations of the Croatian-Hungarian state union. The Hungarians recognized Croatia as an associated party, the Croatian Parliament was officially declared as a Parliament, Croatia was recognized as a political people, with a separate territory with its own borders and complete internal autonomy. Both settlements were accepted in a similar way, by negotiations of the royal committees, by the acceptance of legal articles in the provincial parliaments, by their sanction by the king, and finally, by their promulgation in the parliaments.
