Local elections are a common name for the election of members of the representative bodies of the units of local and regional self-government and the elections for mayors, mayors, prefects and mayors of the City of Zagreb. Members of the representative and executive local authorities in the Republic of Croatia are elected in direct and secretive elections. Elections for local bodies are held on the third Sunday in the month of May every four years. The local elections are announced by the Government of the Republic of Croatia, which by its special decision determines the exact date of the elections. The right to choose members of the representative and executive bodies in the units of local and regional self-government shall be all adult citizens of the Republic of Croatia who have their permanent residence in the area of the election unit. The elections are conducted by the State Election Commission, the election commissions in the units and the electoral committees. Constitutionality, lawfulness and electoral disputes are resolved by the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Croatia in accordance with the Constitutional Act on the Constitutional Court.
