Divorce is a stressful event in a person's life and has a significant impact on the individual and the family. Special attention should be given by adults and society as a whole to the child, who is the most vulnerable family member and often remains unprotected during the divorce process, especially in high-conflict divorces. Due to the narcissistic injury of parents, the phenomenon of Parental Alienation Syndrome occurs as a specific form of manipulative behavior by parents related to the exercise of parental care, causing the child to start rejecting the other parent. The consequences of alienation can have a severe and far-reaching impact on the mental health of the child as an individual. The existing system in our country currently supports parental alienation through untimely and inadequate interventions and is not prepared to protect the child from emotional abuse as a result of divorce. Professionals in helping professions and lawmakers must collaboratively change the current practice significantly and reduce lengthy court processes that contribute to the emergence of alienation. Although the potential for preventive work regarding this issue is significant, systematic prevention of emotional abuse of children during parental divorce, focused on the consequences children experience, is still lacking in Croatia.
