Although small in population, asylum seekers in the Republic of Croatia are faced daily with numerous difficulties. Most of them live in the City of Zagreb where the system of integration and protection is still not completely built. According to available research, the character of migration is forced and unplanned, which results in a series of stressful and traumatic experiences. By reviewing available literature, it can be concluded that the vast majority of refugees bring with them some of the following characteristics: the trauma of living in the country of origin, on the road, trauma caused by trying to adjust to the circumstances in the new environment, living in refugee camps, the physical and psychological consequences of torture and other inhuman behaviors, the experience of illegal detention, death of family members and friends, as well as the diversity of political, economic, cultural and social environment from which they come. Because of the unplanned departure from their birthplace they face economic difficulties that as a lack of financial resources, which affects the quality of life and opportunities to satisfy their basic needs. Uncertainty about getting asylum, inability to work (because they have no documents), and lack of knowledge of the environment in foreign countries where they sought refuge, significantly hinder life and functioning on an equal basis in society and integration into society.
