Young people (especially those in NEET status) are a particularly vulnerable group on the labour market. They face numerous challenges and problems in their transition from the educational system to the adult world and their search for a job. Problems arise with the definition and the upper age limit of a young worker and continue with various modalities of work or work-related experiences they are involved in. The European Union as well as national governments have acknowledged the importance of ensuring a smooth integration of young workers into the labour market and have taken steps to further regulate youth related labour market conditions. For young people the process of integration into the labour market starts well before their first job; they gain their first experience with apprenticeships, traineeships and on student jobs which present an important step in their future careers. Those opportunities, but also the ones they get once they're out of the educational system are not necessarily an ideal option. Student jobs, traineeships and vocational training for work without commencing employment (SOR) carry with them specific benefits, but also new challenges for the youth. This paper lays out the relevant statistics and research pertaining to living and working conditions of youth between the ages of 15 and 30 and the strategies and measures taken by the EU and the Croatian Government (with a focus on Youth Guarantee and active labour market policies) to ease the search for a quality job and diminish youth unemployment and inactivity. It also analyses the effects of different modalities of work and measures eligible for young people and their general performance in resolving the problems of young workers.
